Toledo & Illinois 4-4-0 "American" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Phantom (Locobase 2554)

Data from John H White, A History of the American Locomotive: Its Development, 1830-1880 (Dover Press, 1979), pp. 383-391. Works number was 59 in February 1857.

Another of William Mason's highly regarded 4-4-0s. Boreas, one of the engines of this class ran on the T & I (later part of the Wabash system) until around 1890.

NB: The direct heating surface (including the firebox heating surface) is an estimate calculated by subtracting the calculated tube heating surface from the reported total evaporative heating surface.
