H T Farrell 2-6-0 "Mogul" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 (Locobase 14943)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 65, p. 117. Works number was 54025 in November 1920.

This oil-burning Mogul was built for the stock track, apparently in anticipation of orders from Cuban sugar centrals for what had become a standard plantation locomotive. Plano, Texas's HT Farrell needed a 2-6-0 of modest power to move freight and the 1 proved to be the right size.

So Baldwin made sure the engine satisfied US regulations (e.g., the boiler was no longer described as "for export") and ensured that the details were "arranged so that locomotive can be easily changed to burn coal fuel." The 1 was to "operate in a gravel pit near Dallas, Tex, and must meed all requirements of the ICC and the US Safety Appliance standards." Also, all springs were to be made "one plate heavier than usual."

It was later sold to concrete manufacturer Gifford Hill Company, which may have used it at its Holley plant near Allamoore, Tex.
