Class 2 (Locobase 12368)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 22, p. 176. Works number was 17197 in October 1899.

According to Baldwin's specification, this small six-wheeler went into service on Gay Lumber, located in Sunbury, NC. Other sources report the first owner as Gray Lumber of Waverly, Va, then Kinston, then Gay Lumber. That sequence may refer to another locomotive.


Class Nellie (Locobase 12388)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 22, p. 224. Works number was 17384 in January 1900.

It may seem odd to describe a 12-ton vehicle as "toylike", but this wood-burning six-wheeler's dimensions suggest the adjective (or perhaps "petite", given her name), especially when trailing her 4-wheel tender.

Nellie led a lumber-engine's life. After a few years with Gray Lumber, Nellie went to Blades Lumber Company (New Bern, NC), which sold it in July 1906 to John L Roper Lumber (Norfolk, Va), which gave it #14.
