East Carolina 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 12 (Locobase 13946)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 43, p.143. Baldwin works numbers were 38969 in December 1912.

The ECR was a 12-mile short line that began at Tarboro, NC and ran to Farmville, where it linked to the Norfolk Southern (aka Norfolk & Southern and not the Southern Railway System). It opened in 1901, extended to Maury and Hookerton in 1909.

In 1937, the ECR sold the 12 to the Atlantic & North Carolina, a 95-mile short line that ran between Goldsboro and Morehead. which was reorganized in 1939 as the Atlantic & East Carolina. The A&EC was known as the Tobacco Belt Route and in 1946 became the shortest railroad in North America to operate mainline diesel power when it acquired two EMD F-2-A freight locomotives (400-401).

The 12 was scrapped in June 1946.

The road closed in 1965.
