Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class E51/E51sa (Locobase 4118)

Date from "Atlantic Types Locomotives for the Long Island", Railroad Gazette, Volume 33, No 27 (5 July 1901), p. 483. See also DeGolyer, Volumes 23, p. 270; 24, p. 280. (Thanks to Chris Hohl for researching the full details of this class from the Baldwin specifications.) Works numbers were 18937-18938 in April 1901 and 20488, 20496 in May 1902.

The RG account had a brief description of these camelback Atlantics, which ran the length of the line from Long Island City clear out to Montauk.

According to Connelly, #1 was rebuilt with superheat in 1919, #2 in 1920, #4 in 1922, and #3 in 1923. #2 wrecked on 13 August 1926 when the double-headed Greenport Express derailed at Calverton, 5 miles east of Riverhead; the engineer, fireman, and 4 passengers were killed, at least 10 were injured. 1 was retired in July 1929, after #4 (March 1928) and #3 in April 1929.
