North Pacific Coast 4-4-0 "American" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 16 (Locobase 2147)

Data from Catalogue Descriptive of Simple and Compound Locomotives built by Brooks Locomotive Works, Dunkirk, NY (Buffalo, NY: Matthew-Northrup Company, 1899). See also NWP 10 - 1950 Locomotive Diagram book supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange and the excellent roster on [], access 9 February 2007.

Builder info from B.Rumary, 25 Kingscombe, Gurney Slade, Radstock, BA3 4TH, ENGLAND and Jeremy Lambert as supplied by Allen Stanley in March 2004. Works number was 2421 in March 1894.

The railroad name changed to North Shore, then Northwestern Pacific, but the number always remained 16.

Apparently based on the design shown in Locobase 8167, this engine had a quite-different firebox and tube arrangement. In addition to disposing nine fewer tubes, the locomotive apparently had some arch tubes as the grate area was smaller and the firebox heating surface area was substantially larger. Narrow firebox measured 7 ft (2.134 m) long by 2 ft (0.61 m) wide. Its cab was topped by a slender box that would serve as a clerestory if it had windows.

As with the earlier engines, the 16 served the NPC, the North Shore, and the Northwestern Pacific in succession. It was sold for scrap on 17 October 1934.
