Wabash, Chester & Western 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 440 (Locobase 14974)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 65, pp. 322+. Works numbers were 55639-55640 in September 1922.

Certainly bigger than the Mogul delivered to the WC&W a year earlier, this brace of Consolidations offered a healthy measure of power. So their return to Baldwin in 1924 suggests that the railroad found them too much engine for their requirements (the road would reorganize in a truncated form in 1927).

Baldwin found a willing buyer in 1926 in long-time customer Woodward Iron, which renumbered them 35-36. Curiously, these were the first Baldwin 2-8-0s that Alabama company rostered.
