Pittsburgh & Western 2-6-0 "Mogul" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 19 (Locobase 16425)

Data from "Narrow-Gauge Mogul Locomotive", Railroad Gazette, Volume XV [15] (3 August 1883), p. 509. See Locobase 16422 for a description of the Toledo, Cincinnati & St Louis, which ordered thirteen of this class, but could only take delivery of five. Works numbers were 951, 964 in August 1883.

As explained in Locobase 16422, eight of the wood-burning narrow-gauge Moguls from the Dunkirk, NY builder were either diverted before delivery or quickly sold back and appear under the railroads that bought them from either E B Phillips or Brooks.

The last two in the order, prospectively numbered 99-100 by the TC&StL, were not delivered and instead were diverted to a healthier narrow gauge operation up the Ohio River. Unlike the others, the P&W pair put in years of service with the P&W and, after 1898, with the Glade Creek & Raleigh.

The GC&R was a logging road built to move lumber out of the Glade Creek Canyon section of the New River Gorge in southeastern West Virginia. GC&R trains would move down its narrow gauge from Raleigh (later Beckley), WVa to Glade Station on the New River, where the timber would be transferred to the standard-gauge Chesapeake & Ohio.
